Yes, they dig the holes in the earth, creating rooms. So if you climb out of it you see nothing but the semi-desert and few scattered palms around in the country. The sun is shining upon you, heating at cca 60 degrees C in the shadows, but there are no shadows at all.

They have options, they can live in towns, but it's kind of habit. They live so for generations and don't want to move in dirty cities. The country is empty, but is better than live in a city.
